As a Calgary Marketing Company, so many times I see companies in Calgary struggling with their online marketing. Just the other day I was speaking to a client about her website and she purchased a package from a company who created a proprietary CMS system. (CMS, stands for content management system) A great one that I use is WordPress, unfortunately, I find that ones that are created especially for companies on an individual basis are usually not so great. They are very restrictive and in this case she can’t do anything more with it, than change the text on the page.

So with all that in mind here is some great information that you should know if you have website and you own a business and you want your website to actually generate leads as opposed to be a online business card.

  1. Make sure that whoever is designing a website knows what they’re doing. Don’t let your cousin or your brother-in-law design your site unless they do that for a living. Let’s face it the majority of people like you go on the Internet and do research when buying a new product and service. Do you really want your website that was designed by somebody who was just so-so to represent your company?
  2. Make sure the company or person who designed your site does not use a customized CMS system. Use word press, or HTML/PHP, or Joomla, but not some customized one. If you are going to do that, at least hire a other consultant and paid them for a few hours to give you advice on whether or not what you’re doing is a good choice. When I had to get my furnace fixed, I hired a furnace expert, I am smart enough to know that I know nothing about furnaces and therefore I hired an expert and spent the hundred dollars plus to get it fixed properly.
  3. Besides just having a website designed does the company you’re hiring know anything about SEO ( search engine optimization ) because just creating a website doesn’t mean anybody’s going to ever find it. Without a properly created SEO campaign your website is like having a Billboard in the basement. No one will ever see it, and it will never make you any money.
  4. You want to make the website clean easy to navigate and have the ability to change the simple things yourself. I’m sure many of you will be able to relate to this. You call or email your website guy to make a simple text change and they don’t do it for weeks. Frustrating!!!!!
  5. Lastly, make sure you have a blog as well, as website, blogging ( Like I’m doing now ) is probably the easiest way to get people to like you know you and trust you and create yourself as a authority in your field, so that when people are looking for someone in in your industry you are Top of Mind.
